Wanniassa Hills Primary School

The Wanniassa Community

Wanniassa is the second largest suburb in Canberra. According to a local Tuggeranong region historian, Rebecca Lamb (and former parent of our school), the name "Wanniassa" takes its name from a district in the Indonesian island of Java. Wanajassa is a Javanese word that translates from de Haan's text references, written in old Dutch, to the English equivalent of Waniassa.  The land on which part of the suburb developed in 1976, was named Waniassa 140 years earliers by its owner Thomas Macquoid. Before Macquoid arrived in the Colony of New South Wales in 1829, he had owned land at Wanajassa in the Javanese Regencies where he had built a house.

The theme for the street names within Wanniassa is Victorian State Politicians. One quarter of the suburb is made up of green areas including numerous playing fields and parks for community use. Bike paths crisscrossing the suburb allow for easy bike access to most parts of Wanniassa.

Play Equipment

Communities@Work manages the provision of child care for school aged children at our school. Information on these services and how our Communities@Work support officer assists our school is available on the Communities@Work website.

The Erindale Leisure Centre, located within walking distance of the school, contains a swimming pool, squash courts, basketball courts and gymnasium. Tennis courts are nearby. The suburb also has two convenient shopping centres and a variety of community facilities.

Snowy Hills

The Tuggeranong Valley is beautiful, with sweeping views of the Brindabella Range and the picturesque Murrumbidgee River. There are 18 suburbs within its boundaries all bearing names of special places in Australia's history. The Tuggeranong Valley is significant in Australia's history and visitors can still see old homesteads such as Lanyon and Cuppacumbalong where pioneer families once lived.
